Apical dominance

Apical dominance is a plant growth pattern in which the terminal (apical) bud inhibits the growth of side (axillary) buds, directing resources toward the main stem. This process is regulated primarily by auxin, a plant hormone produced in the apex, and can be modified through pruning or plant training techniques to encourage branching.
