Imbibition

Imbibition is the physical absorption of water into the seed’s tissues, swelling macromolecules and raising internal pressure. This non-metabolic step primes metabolic enzymes, repairs membranes, and sets the stage for respiration and DNA activity. Too fast or too cold? Membranes leak and viability drops—timing and temperature matter.
