These could be used on the ring main itself. Let's say a plumber goes through the cable, this could be used as a permanent fix. Rated to the same level as the ring itself. Each ring main protected with a 30 AMP rcd on board anyway. You will be protected also by the MCB on the board limiting how much the sockets, lights etc can pull at once

I was thinking that, if it did over load or overheat it would trip the RCD
 
Yup. You are covered for earth leakage and over amperage as long as you have both rcd and MCB protection or if you have RCBO switches they do both.
