Has anyone done any experiments with under lighting?

I gifted a cherry tomato plant to a friend last year. I had planted it in a GroBucket. They do not have a garden due to living in their woods and all the critters eat at it. I suggested putting the tomato plant on the balcony and pushing the vines over the edge as it grew. They did this and had a wonderful plant last year. I was happy it worked out for them. It isn't the same as planting it upside down but they do grow where they can.
