I found using pro-mix hp in 5 gal canvas pots the perfect way to grow autos. Using Alaska fish and morbloom. In 5x5 with 3 bestva 600's ( like these with good fans) been getting about 2 ounces per.
 
You can grow in any number of mediums. They all have their advantages and disadvantages.
