Drying seeds before storage?

I've read different threads & have seen answers from right away to a month of drying.
What's the consensus from those that have actually done it a few times? Also do you just leave the seeds laying out in a dark, dry place when drying? Plan on storing them in small screw top vials with a few grains of rice, in both the freezer & refrigerator.
Any tips appreciated.
Thanks.

if viable will it be ok to test at 10 days of drying or should they be chilled a few days first?

Thanks for the post. I had the same question. I put a bunch of white Sirus seeds straight from the bud to an airtight vial. Good thing I looked at this I'd have been plenty upset when I had no viable seeds.
