I'm going to try and post my attempts to make hash here. I've pursued it because it's easier on my lungs than flower or dabs. I've been learning from videos and articles by Frenchy Cannoli and others. To keep expenses down while I figure out if I can do this, I started small:
  • (2) 5-gallon buckets, one with the bottom cut out, $6 each for food-grade
  • (2) 5-gallon filter bags, 45 micon and 190 micron, $10 each

I already had these:
  • 2-gallon bucket and large mixing bowl
  • Hose with spray nozzle
  • plastic trash can to hold ice water (<40°F water is optimal)
  • wash-down pump (to spray ice water)
  • deep freeze (for making ice, freezing fresh bud, freezing fresh hash)
I don't have water filtration yet, but my tap water is excellent (130 ppm)

im quite partical to a bit of hash probably cause thats what we started smoking in my younger years
bubble hash is great i used to make it alot but moved onto dry sifting i find it easier less messy and not having to dry out the hash is a positve for me
with the paint roller and and parchment paper method anyone can make a very high qulity dry sift then press under a hot water bottle like frenchy shows in his videos
i look forward to watching your hash adventures :d5:

I finished harvesting the big outdoor LemonZ photo by Dutch Passion a couple of months ago. I finally picked off the remaining larf a couple of days ago, about a 1/2 a bucket full:
LemonZ_larf.jpg
I covered it with a couple of inches of ice, and filled the bucket 2/3 full with ice water. I made my own ice by freezing gallon jugs at -10°F, and chopped them up with an ice pick. I let the material soak for 15 minutes to soften up so the dry material didn't crumble to dust. Then I agitated the water, ice & larf with a drill-powered paint stirrer for 10 minutes or so. Then I poured it into the bottomless bucket lined with 2 bags, 45 micron and 190 micron. The green material stayed in the 190 micron bag, and the trichomes went through and stayed in the 45 micron bag:

I washed it 3 more times, in just the 190-micron bag in a 5-gallon bucket, adding crushed ice as needed, then took the bag of green stuff out and poured the brown liquid through the 45-micron bag, draining the water to waste. The 4th wash gave reduced return, so after that I put the green stuff in the compost bin, and put the wet hash to dry on parchment paper in the houses at 30% RH. Here are the results of the 4 washes:

I started with the worst material, old trim, to get the hang of it. Now this run with larf. Next run will be fresh-frozen LemonZ quality bud.

My trim-bin collects dry sift, and I recently pressed some into hash. Dynamite! I saw a commercial dry sift machine online somewhere, cooled with CO2 or nitrogen. Amazing! I was watching a video of how they do dry sift commercially in Morocco. Looks good.

I had 4 1-gallon bags of fresh-frozen Lemon Z buds in the deep freeze at -10°F, from the summer outdoor plant, so I did two 5-gallon ice water runs. I think a washing machine is in my future. I washed it in a 190 micron bag, then pulled the bag out and set it aside and poured the greenish liquid through a 45 micron bag. I agitated with a paint stirrer in a drill.

Here's the results of the first wash, collected on the 45 micron bag stretched over a mixing bowl (i couldn't find the frizbee). Behind it is the 190 micron bag ready to get filled with water for another wash:

I borrowed the wife's embroidery hoop to stretch a piece of 25 micron mesh to start the drying. Here's the yield from 4 washes of each of the 2 batches of bud. I was working in the 60°F basement, using ice water to spray with. The trichomes didn't stick to the sieve material at all, until I carried the final results into my 79°F office. It immediately started to stick to the 25u collection surface. I'll have to wash it with alcohol, but the bags stayed clean, the debris hosed right off with 40°F ice water. I used 2 gallons of ice to chill the spray water in a trash can, and a gallon of ice on top of the weed for each run. (I made my own ice in the deep freeze and chopped it up with a hammer and an ice pick)

I tried running a vacuum cleaner hose under the 25u collection surface (per HashTec videos). I guess it removed a little water to speed up drying. Here's everything mixed together and chopped up for drying. I haven't needed the freeze drying rig because RH in my house right now is under 30% so it dries fast enough in the 65°F bedroom. I don't have a way to measure moisture content, except putting it in a jar with a thermo-hygrometer, or just trying to light it up in a pipe (it doesn't burn until it's dry).

Very nice, looks like your having some good results. Any easily avoidable mistakes you can give me a heads up on?
It's easier than I thought, I should have started sooner. The main thing is to keep it cold so the trichomes don't melt. I started in Winter, which probably helps. My basement is 60°F right now, and my tap water is 48°F. I haven't tried doing it in summer when the basement is 75 or 80. Go for it! I'll try and answer any questions.

Be careful with the drill it's easy to over do it and beat up the product. The first time I did that I did it way too hard and my hash turned out green from all the plant martial I destroyed. The key is to be gentle a lot of guys are going iceless nowadays cause even that can be a bit harsh on the trichomes. It looks like you did fine just a heads up something to be careful with :headbang:

Yes, I'll probably switch to using a washing machine soon. I just wanted to get a feel for the process without spending a lot of $$, and see if I can do it. It's easier than I thought, at least in Winter temperatures like we have now. I'm thinking about a DIY dry sift drum too. This one is too big, and a little pricey:

Yeah the cheap washer makes life easier that’s what I do now. First time i used drill second time I used paddle and now I use machine when I do it. Yeah it nice now with the cold temps makes handing it a lot easier and less loss

You can probably make one I have a DIY tumble trimmer that does a pretty good job of that. I tumble weed to trim then take the trimmings and just sift over the trim bin it makes a pretty good quality product

You can buy SS mesh micron screen on Amazon if you want larger micron then trimbin which is 140 I believe
