Heat will depend on how hard you push them and I would imagine the optimal spacing would as well. How many watts will you be running them at (each COB)

At 50w each you should be good with 12" spacing. Adds up with 4 cobs on 4 foot bars. The heat you notice of feel depends on your heatsink. The total amount of heat won't change though. 200w of cobs is around 400btu of heat.
