Answer: I don't think it is needed but definitely is beneficial IMO it all depends on your environment.... I use one for about the first week to help the seed sprout

Well, my cats certainly love the heating pads we have for the bed, back pain, etc... I suspect they would push the seedlings off and sleep on it themselves!
