I think consensus among the connoisseurs is stir and press. I just press. I use the brilliant American invention Aeropress rather than the French. Instructions says stir before press. Freshly ground coffee needs a stir, but coffee procured as ground beans usually disperse nicely in the hot water w/o stirring.
Gotta say, outside of a vacuum pot this IS one of the best cups of black coffee you will ever drink when done right. And its true beauty is when you take it out in the back country and boil a little water and you can enjoy some of the finest coffee in the world while sitting on a mossy log watching the elk work their way across the river below on a cool frosty morning. Actually did that. Wont ever forget it. What a morning.
