When can you call a strain yours, if ever?

They say that because it is very hard to find the original cuts.. Seeds from an elite cut aren't the same as the original cut itself. Old heads are say in the original cut is hard to find. You can find NL genetics in all kinds of strains, as well as by itsself.. But try to find a true NL cut numbered 1-5... NL5 being most popular.. That's not happening at our level, lol. Even if a seed bank has the elite cut of a strain.. Your just getting seeds from that plant.. mabey s1's.. Maybe an outcross.. But neither one is the same as having the elite cut. That's what they mean by hard to find.

can't say much, i've heard of the strain but never looked at its history. Would love to grow some!

I've sampled GDP and it is very reminicint of all the deep indica that make up Dragon genetics. Imo

How many people actually get their hands on so called "elite" clones? And just like my challenge of telling a organic bud from a nutrient fed bud, I say anyone trying to tell you they can tell bud from a clone from bud from seed of the same strain is also full of shit. With a properly bred strain, grown by a competent grower, there will be very little variation among plants, you'd likely have to grow 1000 or more to find one that was superior to the rest and then the only way to really prove that would be with cannabiniod testing. No the whole clone only thing is just more cannabis mythos used to drive sales and keep profit margins high. They may have claim to being the original of a particular cross, but the certainly doesn't make it the best.

I have a Ruby x Stone Dragon.

I'm lead to believe Ruby is a SD pheno with a cross of somthing else @HashMaster was it you that knows the other line? Cinderella99?

Anyhoo, looking to find a male in my Ruby x SD then pollenate a Mohan Ram Auto. This puts White back in but offers structure and size as well as heavy indica. I'll probably loose color but hopefully keep density and speed.

From there I'll be selfing until I can get somewhere close to full autofem and the desired traits of all 3 contributer's!

I'll let you know how I'm doing in a few years! lol!

I think we're talking about two different things. What yours saying has validity to it, but isn't on the same page as my point. Your point seems to be more along the lines of getting seeds of a strain. Which is possible. But to call elite clone only cuts a myth is kind of far fetched. I mean, if you find an amazing pheno, the ONLY way to share that find is thru a clone. Crossing it makes a brand new strain.. Selfing it widens the gene pool. So the only way to get an exact of that gem, is a clone. My point is more to the rarity of these clones. Of course they exist.. But can I talk Bodhi into giving/selling me his Goji cut? Nope. Like I said in my post, it doesn't happen on our level. But big breeders buy, trade and gift elite clones to each other all the time. Can I talk Melvanetic into sharing a cut of her award winning 89 NL5 (that really does exist and has been held since 89)? Nope. But Skunk Va did.

No one can smoke a bud and know whether it was a clone or a seed. But a strain student like myself and many others can smoke a bud and tell you that it not the real OH Death star, for example, which is clone only. So yeah, you can find NL everywhere, but its not easy getting a verified cut of NL 1-5. I've got crosses to them, because NL1-5 were clones.. their aren't NL1-5 seeds for sale that we know about. Just plain NL. So I agree with your point about telling the difference between a clone or a seed by smoking. But I have personally seen elite clones and know they are real and how that all works. The beauty is that we can keep popping seeds in hopes to find our own elite gems to work with!

Ownership, in the sense of having commanding intellectual rights for plants, usually through gov't-granted patents, has become near impossible to obtain just about everywhere in recent years. From what I understand, patents for whole plants, whether developed using genetic engineering or not, are essentially no longer being granted. And If not patented, nobody 'owns' exclusive commercial rights (what patents enforce) - anybody can replicate and (re)sell the seeds (and rename the strain too).

Ownership of, intellectual property rights concerning plant strain names would involve trademarks. Once fully legalized (in the U.S.), I presume the gov't will start issuing trademarks for cannabis strains.

So, there are few, if any, legally-enforceable ownership or naming rights concerning cannabis strains. Anyone can replicate seed and make up and commercially use new names for cannabis strains. With cannabis illegal, what else (non-regulation) would you expect? But I think it's the same with all plants.
