I usually set about 1/2 inch in and lightly cover the seedling. Lights on and about 14-24 inches away your preference. Use a spray bottle to keep the top soil wet while you wait until the seed pops. Spray the top layer of soil once a day.
There are many companies that have good reputations. Dinafem, Fastbuds, but mephisto will be right there at the top. I don't think they have a strain that I would steer you away from, just solid, stoney gear. I'd like to try the Fastbuds pink lemonade, never had colors like that in my grows. Several other breeders have good reps, just put their name in the seach and read, you'll figure out real fast who to stay away from.
You can cut the OF with Light Warrior from for your seedlings. The wet-able powder from extreme gardening and some compost teas would be great with the OF. If you wanted to go a more salt based route for nutrients I have always thought House and Garden produced the nicest looking flowers. 5gal smart pots work great!
