I Think it is the voice brain deception.....you get certain Cues and your brain forms a picture of what to expect to See...
I was the same when I heard Neil Sedaka...my head said woman singing....I did the same with Tiny Tim....
being Honest...I was a kid when he Hit...and I found him quite Scarey....but even now....if I Hear two bars of him singing...his face pops into me brain...Instantly.....

Funniest one was when Hobbsey did the MXLR broacasts....and hearing staff Voices for the first time......
