This is getting technical! So the seed is planted with the nipple pointing up, and the root emerges vertically from the nipple before curving round(180 degrees) into the earth? This seems counter intuitive. I imagined that the root would want to go directly down into the earth as soon as it pops.

You can always try two ways, one in a paper towel till it pops and the other two direct. Just so you can see for yourself. With the paper towel it helps the anxiety of wondering what’s going on under the soil

It does it that way so that when the stem straightens out(turns up) the shell is brushed off by the soil. Plant too shallow or upside down and the shell gets stuck on the baby leaves.

That said, I don't pay attention to how I put the seeds in the dirt. I just drop 'em in and cover then add water. I probably should pay attention as expensive as they are.

Not it is not getting technical , study the photo and it is self explaining .

With the bottom part of the photo here , the seed shoots and finds it is going the wrong way and curls to grow correct way other wise the root would stick up in the air .

There must be someone out there who has studied this and has comparative data - nipple up, nipple down! I see what you mean about the shell being removed.

The vast majority of seeds that germinate(sprout a taproot) will grow regardless of seed orientation. The roots will always grow down. But a few may die if it takes too long to find light or the shell getting stuck can cause problems. It's not a problem for most crops as seeds are cheap. But at $5-10 per seed, I can see being anal and giving the seed extra attention as being worthwhile to some.

That reminds me. Be careful about adding water to a seed in soil. The water can move the seed around or even wash the seed deep into the dirt. Just drip or spray water on the soil above the seed. Never pour.
