Transplanting Autos Causes Stress. Myth?

Hey pop22. Sweet! Have you done this before? I'm assuming you're going to train the sh1t out of her. That looks to be all lateral for root expansion. I wonder then, if the taproot isn't the trigger? Is it when secondary roots reach the end of the media? What exactly triggers flower on an auto?

No, I have not done this before, well not exactly. I did grow an Auto Ultimate in a 20 gallon SIP ( bottom fed pot ) a few years ago. Yes training will be a must I think! I think people place too much emphasis on the tap root, which on most Cannabis isn't all that long, it quickly tapers off after about 6" Most of your root mass spreads out. I've no idea what the potential size of this plant is, but we'll find out! I believe it is not known at this time what actually triggers flowering in autos. I do know she'll behave like an outdoor plant, she'll take a little longer to flower, It may have at least some relation to root mass.

That's good info that I don't recall coming across before or maybe I was just stoned. :smoking: Now that I think about it, the guys growing 30 foot trees don't get deeper pots. They just get wider. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out for you.

As long as you don't mangle your transplant I can't see how you could have issues. Keeping a plant healthy start to finish also will have a huge impact. I transplant all my autos from starter pots to 3 gallon cloth pots and they all end up being monster plants.

his WON'T work with coco, etc, you must plant directly into the medium your using.

Here is transplant of 14-day old plants. I wish I had space and time for them a couple of days earlier. We will see how they do. The roots were to the bottom of the tree tube. there is 10" of soil in the tube and the bottom is open so you can pull the tube straight up. Into a 5 gallon.

I’m going to start an experiment today. Start an auto in a solo cup and let it get a little root bound, just starting to wrap. Then I’m gonna use a box knife when I transplant and make 3-4 slices down the sides of the roots. Apparently that is pretty common practice with photos and veggies so I’m curious to see if it works with autos. Solo cup already started.

Transplanting may stunt your growth but how would you ever know? Just because they don't die does not mean it was fully successful. I simply do not have enough farm space to do a truly scientific cannabis test. Extrapolating my 40+ years experiences with growing organic vegetables and cutting flowers I can state that any kind of transplanting reduces yields compared to seeds planted directly into the garden. Seeds started in greenhouses to get a jump on spring just do not produce as well. I am sure there are other factors besides "transplanting" working here. The question is this: why can't you just plant the seed in the container it will spend its whole life in? I do. My current grow is an exception to that practice as I have never grown in rockwool blocks so I followed GroDan's directions to the letter. The transplanting process is very root friendly but still is a transplant operation. I had 100% germination success with their method. Once again a pretty small sample to mean much. I am very happy with the Hugo blocks and the huge nutrient savings with the drip irrigation system ~ 70% over DWC.

I don't see any need or reason to transplant autos. Regular photos, sure!

The time is ticking when an auto sprouts. No matter how you look at it, transplanting will waste in time of the progress of your root system.

A fine example:
Most people transplant around 14 days. At the 14 day mark(probally a few days earlier with a very good start), I can easily turn on the rez of an EarthBox Jr. A transplant would take another 4 or 5 day before it could be done. It's important to get the plant 'on da rez' as soon as possible. An EB Jr girl will race ahead of A Regular EB and the Reg will eventually pass the Jr in size because of the bigger bank. The Jr girl gets on the rez much sooner.and finishes sooner.
